Chapter 19

Ethan King was officially arrested for the murder of Josip Kovic along with the additional charge of theft since he was found with the artist’s unfinished painting. Kerry wondered if Simon would have the same apprehension to Ethan’s arrest as she did as she walked towards the main doors of the gallery.

An elegant string of blue and white lights wrapped around the twenty-foot pine trees symmetrically balanced on the branches just as the tree themselves were on each side of the main door. Dense snow began to fall and cover the lights giving them an almost angelic appearance with a halo-like glow beneath the snow. The path, shoveled earlier that day, was starting to collect flakes on the cement and marked steps of visitors coming and going from the gallery.

The last time Kerry was here she was curious about her meeting with Kayla and decided to use that visit to bring up the information regarding Josip Kovic’s art. Or more specifically, the fact that his upcoming show was to mark the end of his painting career and subsequently the end of Samantha Martin’s lucrative commission on the sale of his art.

The entrance to the gallery spanned the entire three floors of the structure and was completely enclosed in glass. Light, even on a cloudy day, flooded the entrance and the paintings on the walls were expertly aligned to avoid direct rays of light but to also benefit from the well-lit foyer.

The large painting that hung next to the entrance had now been replaced with three smaller watercolors displayed in a stacked fashion stretching up past the second floor. All painted by Josip Kovic.

“Kerry!” Samantha greeted her as she walked out of her office.

“Hi Samantha,” Kerry said.

“I was going to call you, but I got very busy,” Samantha said as she waved her arm around the gallery. Boxes and frames were stacked along the far wall next to the main gallery area.

“What’s going on?” Kerry asked.

“Well Kovic’s show, of course!” Samantha exclaimed.

“You’re still going through with it?” Kerry asked, feigning ignorance.

“It’s what the family wanted,” Samantha said before turning around and walking towards the main gallery. “Come on, I’ll show you what we have set up.”

Kerry followed Samantha and was impressed with the size of the main gallery. She had only been in the room once, and it was for a charity event being held on New Year's Eve. With the absence of darkness and numerous bodies, Kerry was able to appreciate the enormity of the room and the original purpose that the room was designed for.

Thirty paintings in total were lined and hung on the walls of the gallery each currently shrouded by a light beige sheet. Small tablets were attached to a stand set at waist height and positioned two feet from the wall.

At the very end of the gallery, a picture of Josip Kovic was hanging on the wall alongside a board with the artist's achievements and a summary of his life’s artistic work.

“We are in the process of updating some of the information,” Samantha said referencing the artist’s bio.
